The Canoo App: The Ultimate Guide!

Are you a new permanent resident or citizen in Canada? If so, you may have heard about the Canoo app, which is an app that gives you and up to four children free entry to some of Canada’s most popular attractions, making it the perfect way to explore your new home country without breaking the bank. We recently became citizens and with the app giving us free entry to so many amazing attractions, it really inspired us to travel within Canada and see as much of this beautiful country as we could. I hope you do too!

The Canoo app

In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the steps required to set up the app and give you all the information you need to get started, to help you make the most of your adventures in this beautiful country. The Canoo app provides newcomers to Canada with free access to over 1,400 of the most exciting experiences across the country, ranging from entry to National Parks, historic sites, galleries and museums – so there really is something for everyone, no matter what your interests! In fact, on our recent 2 week roadtrip across Eastern Canada, we used the app to gain entry to over 13 sites and saved over $300 in entry fees and have saved well over $1,000 in total throughout our year of membership!

If you have already downloaded and activated the Canoo app, and would like to know more about some of the wonderful places that you can visit for free, we have written the following guides to help you out!

Who is Eligible for the Canoo App?

The Canoo app is available to anybody that meets the following criteria:

  • Canadian citizens who have received their citizenship within the past 12 months (365 days) and are 18 years old or older.

  • Permanent residents who obtained their permanent residence status within the first 5 years, as indicated by the "Became Permanent Resident On" date on their PR card.

If you are a new Canadian citizen, it is required that you download and register on the Canoo app before your one-year anniversary of the citizenship ceremony to be eligible for this offer. For permanent residents, registration is possible within 5 years of the “Became Permanent Resident On” date on your PR card.

After successful registration on the app, you can activate the Canoo app at any time within a 12-month period. If you fail to activate it within that period, it will be automatically activated at the conclusion of the eligibility period.

How to Register for the Canoo App

Simply download the app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store, then follow the steps to sign up.

Once you have successfully downloaded and activated your membership, this will give you, and up to a maximum of four children (below 18 years of age), one years access to enjoy the advantages of the Canoo pass for free.

How to Navigate the App

The Canoo app may take a little time to familiarize yourself with, especially if you are wanting to just browse attractions in your local area (without a specific attraction in mind). Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how to navigate the Canoo app interface.

Upon opening the app, you’ll find a “What’s on this week” section that you can scroll through. While some of these places to visit may be of interest, many are country-wide and may not be relevant to your specific location.

Scrolling further down the home page, you’ll come across the “Free nearby” section, which provides personalized suggestions based on your current location. This feature utilizes GPS, so the suggestions will change as you travel around the country.

The app also offers a "Map View" option, displaying all the attractions on a map. However, note that you cannot simply type in a location like "Toronto." Instead, you'll need to manually navigate the map to find Toronto, which is a bit of a pain.

Once you’re at the desired location, you can use the buttons at the top of the screen to narrow down the search (e.g., museums only) or leave “All” selected to display all attractions.

When you click on an attraction, you’ll find key information such as cost (almost all are free, but some offer reduced entry), a description of the attraction, opening hours, and details like the website and phone number.

How to Use the Canoo App at at Check in

Once you arrive at the chosen attraction, follow these steps at the check-in counter:

  • Tell the staff that you are a Canoo member (I usually show them the app on my phone at the same time).

  • Have your photo ID handy, as they may request it for verification purposes.

  • Open the Canoo app and click on the "Check-in" button.

  • Depending on the venue, you'll either scan a QR code or enter a venue code provided by the staff.

  • Confirm the number of children accompanying you, if applicable.

  • Slide the bar to the right to complete the check-in process.

  • That's it! You're now checked in and can fully enjoy everything the attraction has to offer.

By following these instructions, you'll be able to navigate the Canoo app with ease and make the most of the attractions available to you as a Canoo member.
