If you’re looking for a wonderful glamping experience on PEI, look no further than the Nature Space Resort. Here is our review from our 2 night stay at this wonderful property, but *spoiler alert*, we loved it!
We visited PEI in July of 2023, as part of a 2 week road trip around Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI. We had already stayed quite a few nights in 'traditional' hotels, including the previous two nights at the Delta Hotel in Charlottetown, so we were keen to experience something different.
While researching our trip, we came across the Nature Space Resort, which is located on the islands North Shore. It is advertised as a wellness and yoga retreat, and we loved the fact that it is nestled right on a lagoon, with plenty of opportunities for kayaking. It is clearly aimed at those that want to 'get away from it all' and spend some time in nature, which sounded great to us!
WHERE IS THE NATURE SPACE RESORT LOCATED?
Nature Space Resort is nestled in a quiet nook along Prince Edward Island's North Shore, right by a beautiful fresh water lagoon that backs on to the property. It is just moments down the road from St. Peter's beach (which is a hidden gem on the island) and St. Peter's lighthouse. It's great if you want to get off the beaten track and stay away from the crowds that tend to gravitate towards Cavendish Beach and the National Parks. Below is a photo of the beach at St. Peters - not bad considering it was the middle of the day on a weekend!
CHECK-IN EXPERIENCE
We arrived in the evening at around 7pm and owners (Heather & Jarrod) had been in touch with us throughout the day via text message to ensure that they were around to meet us when we arrived. I wouldn't really call it a check in per se; more of an introduction to the resort, which was very befitting of the laid back vibe of the resort. Jarrod showed us around the property, starting with the communal washroom and kitchen areas (which were both beautifully designed and extremely well maintained), the office where you could purchase snacks, and of course our yurt. We were able to text Heather and Jarrod throughout our stay if we needed anything which was a really nice personal touch.
THE FOX YURT
This was our first time staying in a yurt and I have to say we absolutely loved the whole experience. Our Mongolian inspired yurt (the Fox Yurt) had been thoughtfully furnished by Heather - you can tell she has an eye for interior design. In fact, we found out that the yurts are furnished with locally made furniture from reclaimed wood from derelict barns on the island! We had a double bed along with a trundle bed which was perfect for our family.
They had thought of everything. Jugs of fresh filtered water, a coffee maker set up for tea and coffee, wine glasses, flashlights, towels and robes for the hot tub. There is an air conditioner for the summer and even a log burning stove, with kindling for use in the winter. You could open or close the top of the yurt so you could even see the stars at night!
Outside the yurt there was a private hot tub on the balcony, a free standing hammock, as well as string lights to luminate the area at night. It was very pretty and a great outside space.
THE BEE HIVE
The Bee Hive building houses the kitchen and washrooms, but also serves as the main area where you can cook, eat and hang out. The kitchen is really well thought out, with each yurt being assigned an individual section in the cupboards and fridge. The kitchen was well equipped with dishes, pots & pans and all the cookware and utensils you could need.
The washroom area is a shared space but has separate toilet and shower rooms enclosed within it. One room is a full bathroom, holding a bathtub/shower combo and the other two rooms are a separate toilet and separate shower room.
The hive space really gave the feeling of a posh 'hostel' where you could cook and meet other travelers, and that is exactly what happened in our experience. We met a lady that had cycled the entire confederation trail, and our kids found a friend who was also from Calgary (it's a small world). There were plenty of board games and books in the room, as well as a deck area you can sit out and relax on.
UNIQUE EXPERIENCES AT THE NATURE SPACE RESORT
One of the aspects that we loved about this resort, was that the whole program really focused on providing a variety of experiences depending on peoples interests. These ranged from culinary experiences (they offer a Farm-to-Table oyster experience where you kayak on-top of an active oyster farm, which sounds amazing!), various yoga and wellness classes and retreats, guided nature walks around the property, as well as our personal favourite, kayaking St. Peter's Lake, which is an ocean lagoon that provides protected and calm waters to paddle in.
It was a great experience to get out on the water, and we saw an abundance of wildlife, including a rather magnificent bald eagle, which we had never seen before! You can either take the kayak's out on your own, or book a tour, where Jarod gives his local insight in to the nature that can be found around the lagoon.
WOULD WE GO BACK?
In summary, we loved our stay at the Nature Space Resort and wouldn’t hesitate in returning when we are next in PEI. It’s always great to experience something different when travelling, and with all the extra activities you can do here, there will always be plenty to do. I also really would love to try the kayaking oyster tour next time we are there as well!
